From Fertility to Postpartum, pregnancy is an incredible journey.

But this is one journey that encompasses a whole lot of changes for the body. Whether you’re looking for support with fertility, needing to address symptoms during different stages of pregnancy, or navigating postpartum recovery, acupuncture can provide so many benefits throughout.

To show you how acupuncture can help during each phase, we created this timeline. For more info on each, keep reading below!

Fertility Support

Acupuncture can play a pivotal role even before you’re pregnant. Treatments can help:

  • Regulate menstrual cycles
  • Improve sperm count and motility
  • Increase blood flow to reproductive organs
  • Decrease stress and anxiety

Think of it as prepping the soil before planting the seed: we’re supporting your body’s rhythms, reducing stress, and setting the stage for everything that comes next.

The First Trimester (Weeks 1 to 12)

The early weeks of a pregnancy can bring big physical and emotional changes. Acupuncture can help ease:

  • Nausea, vomiting and fatigue
  • Emotional fluctuations
  • Headaches
  • Sleep issues
  • Anxiety

Early pregnancy can feel like a lot (because it is), and our goal is to help you feel more grounded, comfortable, and supported as your body adapts.

Second Trimester (Weeks 13 to 27)

As your baby grows, you may start to feel new aches and discomforts. Acupuncture can help address:

  • Back pain
  • Digestive discomfort
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Low energy
  • Stress

These sessions are all about keeping you feeling good: minimizing the discomforts, boosting your energy, and giving your nervous system a chance to exhale.

Third Trimester (Weeks 28 to 40+) and Labour Prep (Weeks 32 to 36)

This final stretch can bring a lot of anticipation and physical strain. Acupuncture can help with:

  • Swelling
  • Carpal tunnel pain
  • Back and pelvic pain
  • Insomnia
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Anxiety

As you move into the home stretch, our focus shifts toward labour prep: helping you stay as comfortable and calm as possible while supporting your body’s natural readiness for birth.

Speaking of which… we can also help with labour prep from around the 32- to the 36-week mark. These appointments focus on:

  • Optimizing fetal positioning
  • Encouraging cervical ripening
  • Supporting a smooth, gradual onset of labour
  • Helping the body and mind feel ready in a gentle, natural way

A common myth is that acupuncture will make someone go into labour. But despite what you may have heard, acupuncture does not induce labour; it just helps to facilitate it. We’re not here to rush anything, and there is nothing we do that can force somebody into labour, or cause a miscarriage before it is ready.

With acupuncture, we’re supporting the body’s natural timing by encouraging the gentle rise of key hormones involved in starting labour, such as oxytocin, prostaglandins, and endorphins.

Essentially, we help the body reach a more ready and receptive state, so that when the baby and the birthing person are both ready, labour can unfold more smoothly and efficiently.

Postpartum Recovery

After a birth, it’s all about healing and rebalancing. Acupuncture can support you by:

  • Balancing hormones
  • Supporting recovery
  • Supporting milk supply
  • Supporting mental health and emotional balance

Helpful at Any Time During Pregnancy

Throughout your pregnancy journey, acupuncture can aslo be helpful with:

Mental health support:

  • Managing anxiety, overwhelm, and mood swings
  • Acupuncture is especially recommended for patients with a history of miscarriage, fertility challenges, or mental health conditions such as PMDD and depression

Preventative care and pregnancy maintenance:

  • Regulating the nervous system
  • Improving blood flow to the uterus and placenta
  • Support hormonal balance

Regular treatments are especially impactful in the first trimester and the beginning of the second. And the earlier you begin acupuncture during your pregnancy journey, the more we can support you: before, during, and after birth.
