Why Does Acupuncture Work for Some and Not Others?
This is a question I’ve been sitting with for years, both professionally and personally.
You’ve likely heard someone rave about how acupuncture changed their life after one treatment, while someone else shrugs and says, “I didn’t feel much.” And honestly? Both are valid. As much as I’d love for every single person to feel like fireworks went off after their first session, that’s just not always how it works. And here’s why…
It’s All About Qi
Qi (pronounced “chee”) is everything and everywhere in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It’s loosely translated as energy, but it’s more than that: it’s movement, transformation, warmth, protection, and holding things in place. And when you walk through the doors of The Village, that’s ultimately what we’re assessing: How is your Qi moving?
In TCM, Qi moves in four directions: up, down, inward, and outward. Each of your organs plays a role in moving your Qi in specific ways. To name a few: your Liver is in charge of the smooth flow of Qi, your Spleen moves it upward, your Stomach moves it downward, your Lungs move it down, in and out, and so on. When that movement gets stuck or misdirected, symptoms show up physically, emotionally, mentally, AND energetically.
Capacity: The Missing Piece No One Talks About
If you’re noticing that acupuncture isn’t working as fast as you’d like, it might come down to this: your capacity.
Let’s say you show up with a frozen shoulder that’s been bothering you for nine months, and you’re hoping for an acupuncture miracle. I’ll absolutely give you one, but it might not look or feel like what you expect right away. What I can promise is one full hour of solace, where everything else fades and your only job is to make room for more capacity.
Our first session is often a true assessment of your capacity. And here’s the truth: your body can only handle so much change. The number of needles we use is a direct reflection of the capacity that we’ve assessed in your body: in other words, what can it safely handle based on what we’re asking it to do?
If you tell me you hate change or resist it with every cell in your being, then I already know our first 4 to 10 sessions will be focused on expanding your capacity to shift. You can resist me (and the needles) all you want, but at some point, you’ll have a breakthrough or better yet, a download about how you can better show up for yourself.
I see it in myself too. My son, who’s incredibly attuned, can spot my “capacity meter” from a mile away. If I’m jumpy at every little noise, forgetting words, or unable to function for more than an hour at a time, those are my red flags waving.
So now, I’ve been working on recognizing my capacity before the red flags start flying. Regular acupuncture, chiropractic, naturopathic care, sauna and float sessions, best friend night: these are the tools that help me refill my reserves.
Capacity isn’t about how much you want to feel better. It’s about how much your body and nervous system can safely handle as you heal. Acupuncture meets you in that space between readiness and resistance and helps nudge the dial forward.
Why Do Some People Feel a Shift Instantly While Others Take Longer?
It comes down to a few things:
1. How Stuck You Are
Some people arrive carrying layers and layers of long-held stagnation: physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It doesn’t mean acupuncture won’t work for you. It just means it might take a little more time to peel back the layers and get things moving again.
2. Your Qi Reserves
If you are in full burnout, your body’s resources are depleted. You might be running on empty, and that means healing can feel slower or more subtle. But here’s the beautiful part: acupuncture is one of the best things you can do in burnout. It forces you to slow down. To choose yourself. To work on making room for increased capacity. It’s the chance to get quiet and reconnect with what your body actually needs.
3. Digesting Food and Life
It all starts with the core: your digestion. In TCM, how well you digest food reflects how well you “digest” life. If your gut is off, your ability to process emotions, stress, and even treatments like acupuncture can be compromised. This is why we often start at the center and work our way outward.
4. Your Capacity
Your willingness to shift is only part of the equation. Your capacity to hold those shifts is the rest. Healing doesn’t always happen at the speed of your desire, it happens at the speed of your capacity.
The Practitioner Fit Matters Too
Healing is intimate work. And just like any relationship, not every acupuncturist will be the right fit for you. And that’s completely okay.
I’ve had people tell me their last acupuncture experience did nothing, and then they feel dramatic shifts in their first session with me. I’ve also had people I just didn’t click with. It’s not personal, it’s just energy — it’s best if you are aware of it.
As you grow, evolve, and explore, your healthcare needs shift too. So if you’re feeling stuck or like nothing is working, I lovingly suggest searching “acupuncturist near me.” Try someone new. Ask questions. Follow your gut. You’ll know when you’ve found the right fit.
The Bottom line: acupuncture works. But how it works and how fast depends on your Qi, your reserves, your capacity, your timing, and yes, your acupuncturist. If you’re curious, confused, or feeling a bit off, let’s explore it together.
